Marie Tosto

Marie Tosto was born in Pennsylvania, just outside of Philadelphia, in 1970. She received her BFA from Moore College of Art & Design in 1992 and her MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2013. After undergrad, Marie briefly worked for an apparel company in New York. In 1993 she relocated to California, where she resided for three years. While in CA, she worked odd jobs and continued taking classes and creating her artistic voice. During these early explorations, she determined her most authentic work was intuitive and without a superimposed intent. Marie began the practice of releasing her ego and letting the painting or drawing guide itself. Finally, her work expressed what she was feeling without the need to verbally tell the story. This was a defining moment in Marie's approach to her artwork and studio practice. She discovered that to communicate and relate to people universally, she needed to abandon and quiet the editor in her head. Three years later Marie relocated back to Pennsylvania. In 1999 she gave birth to her daughter. A year later she began her career in the cosmetics industry and continued pursuing her education as an artist. In 2010, Marie received her Post Baccalaureate Certificate from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and her MFA in 2013.

In addition to maintaining her art practice, Marie supports herself and family as a freelance makeup artist Shiseido America for Laura Mercier Cosmetics, Shiseido Skincare, and fragrances by Dolce & Gabbana, Burberry, and Hermès. As an art advocate, Marie participates in sophomore and junior portfolio reviews and adjudications for incoming freshman at Carver Center for Arts and Technology. She is currently embarking on a 365 day drawing challenge and shares on her website and various social media outlets. Marie continues to define who she is as an artist and develop what she wants her identity to be as a contemporary artist.
